A bat wing is a horrifying side effect of aging for women. The bat wing appears more prominent when the arm is held loosely horizontal to the side and the palm faces forward, at which time loose fat and sagging skin will create the appearance of a wing under the upper arm. The bat wing will appear even on women who are otherwise muscular and fit, although they will appear much earlier on flabby women.

If a woman with a bat wing were to wave with her arms uncovered, the bat wing will wave separately, with a similar amplitude but with a phase shift of 90 to 180 degrees to the rest of her arm.
